In today’s world of processed food and canned goods, it is almost impossible to escape sugar. As much as I love sugar and desserts, I cannot turn a blind eye to the side effects of sugar in our body. This crystalline carbohydrate acts as a sweet poison when taken in huge amounts. If you think that you have control over the desserts you are eating, think again as we consume so many foods with a high sugar content that we don’t even know about.
Food pyramid lets us know how much quantity of food items should be consumed. According to the American Heart Association, men should intake not more than 150 calories of sugar or 37.5 grams while women should not consume more than 100 calories or 25 grams.
There is no escaping the sugar as it is present not just in sweets and desserts but also in sauces, salad dressings, marinades, fruit juices, and pasta. We just don’t know it as we have become so accustomed to it.
Entrenched in our daily diet by way of processed goods, our bodies have become addicted to sugar. The addiction is so strong in fact that the body goes through withdrawals if you go with a no-sugar diet.
What Is Sugar?
Made of hydrogen and oxygen, sugar is a molecular carbohydrate. It is found naturally in almost all the plants, but the sugar we use is harvested from sugar cane.
